Our Story

Banyan Soaps arose from a hobby that started several years ago when Gary Perkins began making soaps for his friends as gifts. Gary, a forty-year veteran science teacher, holds a Master’s degree in biological sciences. While he was the director of a marine science center in Florida, he discovered that commercially available soaps were unsafe to use with marine life since the detergent was damaging. Gary’s love for biology and dedication to his work inspired him to search for a “fish friendly” soap. Banyan Soaps was born.

No matter how well you wash your hands with soap and water, there is still detergent residue left on your skin. Gary studied this residue exposure on marine life and found that over time the detergent builds up in the eco-system and causes harm to fish and other living things. Gary developed a detergent-free fish-friendly soap that actually attracts fish to you because there is no residue left on your skin to repel the fish when you place your hands in water. Even better, this soap contains the ingredient anis, which serves as an attractant to bring the fish closer to you. What more could a fisherman ask for?

Banyan Soaps has grown to include many products in addition to the original fish-friendly soap, but the philosophy behind our products remains the same. Banyan Soaps are made from natural, organic ingredients which are safe for people and the environment.
